The City Palace of Udaipur is the largest royal palace complex in Rajasthan — a vast, layered structure of domes, towers, arches, and hanging balconies built continuously by successive Maharanas over four centuries from 1553 to the early twentieth century. Unlike the formal symmetry of Mughal architecture, the City Palace grew organically: each ruler added to what his predecessors had built, creating a labyrinthine sequence of courtyards, painted chambers, mirrored halls, and elevated terraces that survey the entire lake. Kamran will take you through the Zenana Mahal — the women’s quarters, whose interiors are decorated in extraordinarily vivid blue and white Chinese tiles — the Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) whose three mosaic peacocks of glass and tile represent the three seasons of Rajasthan, and the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) with its intricate five-niche mirror work. From the upper terraces, the panoramic view of Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace floating in its centre is one of the defining images of Indian travel.

A five-minute walk north of the City Palace’s main gate stands the Jagdish Temple — a towering Indo-Aryan style temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh I. The exterior is encrusted with superb sculptural detail: friezes of elephants, horses, musicians, dancers, and celestial beings cover every surface of the 79-step base and the soaring shikhara tower above. Inside, the black stone image of Vishnu as Jagannath (Lord of the Universe) has been worshipped continuously here for over 370 years. Unlike many heritage temples that feel like museums, Jagdish is a functioning place of daily devotion — flower offerings, incense smoke, and the ring of prayer bells make this an immersive encounter with living Rajasthani religious life. We descend to the ghats on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola for a private boat excursion across one of Rajasthan’s most beautiful lakes. Lake Pichola was created in 1362 AD — nearly two hundred years before the city itself was founded — and stretches four kilometres in length and three in width. From the water, the City Palace reveals a scale that is impossible to appreciate from land: it rises over thirty metres directly from the lake’s edge, its reflection shimmering on the surface below. Our boat navigates to Jag Mandir — the Island Palace built between 1551 and 1652, whose sandstone elephants line the jetty and whose interior garden contains a pavilion of pure white marble. It was here, in 1623, that the Mughal prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) sought refuge from his father Jahangir, sheltered by the Maharana of Udaipur. The same Rajput sense of honour that refused subjugation also extended to a fugitive prince. Kamran will tell you this story on the water, with the palace on one side and the Aravalli hills shimmering in the midday haze on the other.

One of the most unusual and quietly beautiful sites in all of Udaipur, the Saheliyon Ki Bari — literally the Garden of the Maidens of Honour — was built in the eighteenth century by Maharana Sangram Singh II as a private pleasure garden for the royal women and their forty-eight attendants. The garden is a sequence of formal fountains, lotus pools, carved marble elephants, a delicate kiosk pavilion entirely of marble, and shaded walkways that were designed specifically for the women of the zenana to spend their leisure hours undisturbed. The fountains here run on natural pressure from the Fateh Sagar lake above, with no mechanical pumping — an engineering achievement of remarkable sophistication for its era. The mood is contemplative and cool, the scale intimate. Kamran will explain the social world of the Rajput zenana — its internal politics, its artistic culture, and the extraordinary lives of the women who lived within it.

One of India’s most unexpected and magnificent collections — the Vintage Car Museum of the Mewar royal family preserves the personal automobile fleet of successive Maharanas from the early twentieth century. The centrepiece is a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II that was converted into an open-top parade car for royal processions. Other highlights include a 1938 Cadillac, a 1946 Austin Princess, a 1920s-era Mercedes-Benz, and a fleet of Rolls-Royces used for shikar (royal hunting) expeditions. The cars are in extraordinary condition, maintained to running order. What makes the collection remarkable beyond the vehicles themselves is what it reveals about the Mewar royal family’s position in the world — these were not provincial noblemen but rulers who corresponded with European monarchies, held formal state occasions, and maintained a court that rivalled any on the subcontinent. Kamran contextualises the collection within the broader story of how the Rajput kingdoms navigated the British Raj and the eventual independence of India.

Modest dress is recommended throughout — shoulders and knees covered when entering temples such as Jagdish Temple and Karni Mata. Scarves or light shawls (easily carried) are ideal. Light colours or pastels photograph beautifully against Udaipur’s white marble and blue-gold lake. Comfortable flat shoes are essential: the City Palace involves significant walking on uneven marble surfaces and steps, and you will remove footwear at temple entrances. Sandals that slip off easily are ideal.

A telephoto or zoom is ideal for details on the carved marble facades and for capturing the Lake Palace from the boat. Extra batteries and memory cards are strongly recommended — the golden hour session alone will fill a card. Tripods are permitted in public areas.
Sun Protection: Udaipur’s Rajasthani sun is intense, particularly between April and September. High-factor SPF sunscreen, UV-protection sunglasses, and a light hat or cap are essential for midday outdoor sections including the City Palace terraces, the lake ghats, and Dudh Talai garden.
Light Shawl or Scarf: Required for temple entry (Jagdish Temple, Karni Mata). Also useful in air-conditioned sections of the City Palace museum and during the cooler evening hours by the lake. Lightweight cotton or silk — doubles as a sun cover and a photography prop for couples.
Cash (INR): Small amounts of Indian Rupees for optional tips, personal purchases, the optional Karni Mata ropeway (approx. INR 50–100 per person), and Udaipur’s extraordinary craft bazaars — miniature paintings, silver jewellery, block-printed textiles, and hand-painted pottery are among Rajasthan’s finest.
